Honing Your Parenting Skills: Quick How-to's

By: Paul P Seles

If you have been hearing your own parents sigh about how different it is to raise children these days, they are not far off the mark. Being a parent is not an easy thing; it had not been easy for your parents and it has become more challenging these days. These days, children are more independent, more restless and are more opinionated and are unafraid to learn about anything they find interesting. Pretty much like anything these days, outdated parenting skills need to go and it is high time you hone some new skills.

There are several tips you can keep in mind when you need to develop your child rearing skills. First of all, you need to listen to your child. If you think your ten year old will meekly listen while you talk down at her, you're wrong; children these days have learned to talk back and they're not afraid to do so.

Often enough, children misbehave because their parents do not make an effort to listen to them. This may come as a surprise to you but your children has no interest listening to you talk about how you behaved when you were their age and how you were disciplined, etc.; they want - no, they need you to listen to them and this is the only way you can understand them. You may be surprised as to how simply listening to your children can help in their total transformation into responsible and well balanced individuals.

Sit quietly, do not interrupt your children while they talk and just listen to them; if they ask for your advice and help, then by all means, step in. Tell them you appreciate them speaking to you about their troubles and always let them know you love and support them.

When talking about being there for your children, we do mean being there for them. Take a minute and think of the number of times you didn't attend your eight-year old daughter's junior recital because of work or the number of time you missed your son's Saturday soccer games because you needed to do a little work over the weekend. You should ask yourself, is the extra time at work worth it?

These bit parts in plays and little league games matter a lot to your child and it's important for them you are there, watching and beaming proudly at them; you do not need websites like http://positiveparentingskills.com to tell you how being there during these proud moments can boost your parenting skills. Your children seeks your approval above all else and showing up during these times can solidify your relationship.
